Church Tax in Germany (Kirchensteuer): Complete Guide for Expats
Last updated:
Church tax (Kirchensteuer) is an extra 8–9% on your income tax — often triggered at Anmeldung. How to check if you pay it, what it costs, and how to opt out (Kirchenaustritt).
What Is Church Tax (Kirchensteuer) in Germany?
Kirchensteuer (church tax) is an additional tax collected by the Finanzamt on behalf of recognised religious communities. If you are registered as a member, it is typically deducted automatically from your salary alongside income tax — not a voluntary donation you can pause each month.
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Rate | 8% of income tax (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) or 9% (most other states) |
| Applies to | Members of recognised churches — mainly Catholic (rk) and Protestant (ev) |
| Often triggered by | Religion field on Anmeldung or church membership records |
| How to stop | Kirchenaustritt (formal exit) at the Amtsgericht |
| Exit fee | Typically €30–35 (varies by Bundesland) |
Many expats discover Kirchensteuer only on their first payslip. The religion field on the Anmeldung form can look harmless — but selecting ev or rk may activate church tax from your first payroll.

Who Pays Church Tax in Germany?
| Situation | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Payslip shows Kirchensteuer or KiSt | You are paying — consider Kirchenaustritt if you do not want to |
| Meldebescheinigung shows ev, rk, or similar | Registered as church member — church tax usually applies |
| Selected a religion at Anmeldung by mistake | Kirchenaustritt + update Meldedaten at Bürgeramt |
| Listed keine or left religion blank | No Kirchensteuer in most cases |
| Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or other non-recognised faith | No Kirchensteuer — unless also registered with a recognised church |
| Freelancer paying Einkommensteuer | Same rules — Finanzamt may add Kirchensteuer to your assessment |
Kirchensteuer applies to employees and freelancers alike. Employees: check your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung. Freelancers: check your Einkommensteuerbescheid.
Church tax by federal state
| State | Rate (% of income tax) |
|---|---|
| Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg | 8% |
| All other states (e.g. Berlin, NRW, Hamburg) | 9% |
The rate depends on where you live (Wohnsitz), not where you work.
How Much Is Church Tax in 2026?
Kirchensteuer is calculated as a percentage of your income tax (Lohnsteuer / Einkommensteuer), not your gross salary.
Example: A single employee earning €50,000 gross in Berlin might pay roughly €6,500 in income tax. At 9%, Kirchensteuer adds about €585/year (~€49/month). In Munich (8%), roughly €520/year.
The higher your income tax, the more Kirchensteuer you pay. There is no cap.

How Church Tax Gets Triggered at Anmeldung
At Anmeldung, the registration form includes a Religion/Konfession field. If you enter ev (Protestant), rk (Catholic), or another recognised code, the Finanzamt may treat you as liable for Kirchensteuer.
Expat tip: If you are not an active member, leave the field blank or enter keine / ohne. Clerks sometimes suggest a default — you can decline.
Other triggers include baptism records held by recognised churches in Germany or abroad. In practice, the Anmeldung religion field and payroll Steuerklasse data are what most employed expats notice first.
How to Check If You Pay Church Tax
0 of 8 complete
0%
On your payslip
Look for Kirchensteuer, KiSt, or Kist on your German payslip. If the line shows an amount, you are currently paying.
On your Meldebescheinigung
Request a Meldebescheinigung from your Bürgeramt and check Religion/Konfession:
- ev — Protestant — church tax usually applies
- rk — Roman Catholic — church tax usually applies
- ak, fr, is — other recognised communities — may apply depending on state
- — or keine — no church tax in most cases
If you have not started working yet, check this before your first payslip.
How to Leave the Church (Kirchenaustritt)
To stop paying, you must formally leave the religious community (Kirchenaustritt). Since 2013, this is handled by the Amtsgericht (local court) — not the church.
Step 1 — Book a Kirchenaustritt appointment
- Search "Kirchenaustritt [your city]" or use justiz.de to find your local office
- Book online or by phone — Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich can have 1–4 week waits
- Note the administrative fee (typically €30–35)
You do not need to visit a church or explain your reasons. Kirchenaustritt is a civil administrative act.
Step 2 — Attend the appointment
Bring passport or ID, Meldebescheinigung, and payment for the fee. Some states may ask for a birth certificate — check your Kirchenaustrittsstelle website.
You typically receive a Kirchenaustrittsurkunde (exit certificate) on the spot. Keep it with your Steuer-ID documents.
Step 3 — Wait for the Finanzamt update
The Amtsgericht notifies the Finanzamt. Processing often takes 1–3 months. Church tax usually stops from the month after the Finanzamt records your exit — not from the appointment date.
Tell your employer's HR once you have the certificate. They may adjust payroll manually if the Finanzamt update is delayed.
Step 4 — Update Meldedaten (recommended)
Ask the Bürgeramt to remove or correct the religion entry on your registration. Bring your Kirchenaustrittsurkunde. This helps if you move and re-register later.
Church Tax for Expats and Freelancers
Employed expats
Church tax appears as a payroll deduction once the Finanzamt has you registered as a church member. Your tax class affects income tax — and therefore KiSt — but does not replace the membership registration itself.
Freelancers and self-employed
If you file Einkommensteuer, the Finanzamt may add Kirchensteuer to your tax assessment based on the same membership status. Freelancers are not exempt simply because they do not receive a payslip.
Does Kirchenaustritt affect your visa?
No. Leaving a church is a civil act and typically has no impact on your Aufenthaltstitel, settlement permit, or citizenship application.
How Much Does Leaving Church Tax Cost?
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Kirchenaustritt at Amtsgericht | €30–35 (varies by Bundesland) |
| Meldebescheinigung (if needed) | €5–15 |
| Ongoing Kirchensteuer if you stay registered | 8–9% of your income tax each year |
Past payments are not refunded. Each month you delay may cost money while you remain registered.
How Long Until Church Tax Stops?
Check payslip or Meldebescheinigung for church tax status
Same day
Book Kirchenaustritt appointment at Amtsgericht
1–4 weeks wait — varies by city
Attend appointment and receive Kirchenaustrittsurkunde
Usually same day at appointment
Finanzamt updates your tax status

Book Kirchenaustritt as soon as you confirm you are paying and want to stop — appointment waits can add weeks.
Common Church Tax Mistakes
I ticked a religion at Anmeldung by mistake
Submit Kirchenaustritt at the Amtsgericht and update your Meldedaten at the Bürgeramt. Past payroll deductions are usually not refunded.
I only noticed KiSt months after starting work
You can still leave — but you may have paid several months already. Check your payslip and Lohnsteuerbescheinigung for the total.
I thought Kirchenaustritt meant visiting a church
It is a court appointment, not a religious ceremony. Search for Kirchenaustrittsstelle or Amtsgericht, not your local parish office.
Church tax stopped on my payslip but Meldedaten still show ev/rk
Update registration at the Bürgeramt to avoid confusion when you move. Keep your Kirchenaustrittsurkunde.
My child is listed with a religion at Anmeldung
Children registered with a recognised denomination may become liable for church tax once they earn income. Review family Anmeldung entries when registering children.
Other common mistakes
- Assuming non-baptised expats cannot be charged — Anmeldung religion field can still trigger payroll KiSt
- Expecting a retroactive refund after Kirchenaustritt — usually not available
- Ignoring KiSt on freelance tax assessments
Church tax FAQs
How much is church tax in Germany?
Kirchensteuer is 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% in all other federal states. It is calculated on your income tax bill, not your gross salary. On a €50,000 gross salary, a single employee might pay roughly €400–700 per year in church tax depending on deductions and state.
Can I get a refund after leaving the church?
Generally no retroactive refund. Kirchensteuer usually stops from the month after your Kirchenaustritt is registered with the Finanzamt — not from the date you apply. If you have been paying for years, past payments are typically not refunded. Apply as soon as you realise you are registered.
Does leaving the church affect my visa or residence permit?
No. Kirchenaustritt is a civil administrative act and has no impact on your Aufenthaltstitel, Niederlassungserlaubnis, or citizenship application. Germany guarantees freedom of religion and the right to leave a religious community.
What if I selected a religion by mistake at Anmeldung?
Act promptly. If you listed ev, rk, or another recognised denomination on the Anmeldung form, the Finanzamt may treat you as liable for Kirchensteuer. Submit a Kirchenaustritt at the Amtsgericht and ask the Bürgeramt to update your Meldedaten if the religion field still shows a faith.
Do Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists pay Kirchensteuer?
No. Kirchensteuer only applies to members of certain recognised public-law religious communities — mainly the Catholic Church (rk), Protestant Church (ev), and a few others such as Old Catholics and some Jewish communities (depending on state agreements). Other faiths are not subject to Kirchensteuer.
I'm not baptised — can I still be charged church tax?
Yes, in many cases — if you registered a recognised denomination at Anmeldung or the church holds baptism records. Many expats tick a religion box without understanding the tax consequence. Your Anmeldung religion field is often what triggers payroll deduction, not whether you attend services.
How is church tax different in Berlin vs Bavaria?
The rate differs: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg use 8% of income tax; Berlin and most other states use 9%. The calculation base is always your income tax amount, not gross salary. Use the salary calculator with church member enabled to compare net pay.
