Our mission

German bureaucracy is confusing, especially when official information is in German and scattered across dozens of websites. ExpatDesk gives you one clear, step-by-step path for each task — with checklists, document lists, and links to official sources.

What ExpatDesk is

ExpatDesk is an English-language guide site for expats in Germany. Each page focuses on one process (registration, visa steps, benefits, insurance, and similar topics) so you can see what you need, in what order, without reading forum threads in three languages.

Guides follow the same layout: overview, who it applies to, documents, step-by-step instructions, common mistakes, FAQs, and a source list at the bottom. Interactive checklists help you track your own progress — they are not submitted to any German office.

How we work on content

We draft guides in English and align steps with official sources (German law texts, federal and state authorities, and recognised institutions such as the Agentur für Arbeit or Finanzamt where relevant). We do not copy government pages; we summarise processes for readers who need English.

  • Every guide includes a last verified date and linked sources you can open yourself
  • Legal amounts and deadlines that repeat across guides are kept consistent in our internal fact checks
  • Wording is qualified where rules vary by city, status, or case (for example “typically” or “in most cases”)
  • When readers report an error, we correct the guide and update the verification date where needed

Guides are informational only. They are not a substitute for advice from a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt), tax advisor (Steuerberater), or your local Bürgeramt / Ausländerbehörde. Rules change; your case may differ from the examples on this site.

We do not publish individual author bylines on guides; the site speaks as ExpatDesk, and you can always reach us via email or the contact form with corrections or questions.
